A: Teachers may initially participate for up to three years, with the possibility of requesting a one- or two-year extension, for a maximum total duration of five years, subject to sponsor and Department of State approval. 

Q: Are J-1 Teachers fully qualified teachers?

A: Yes. J-1 Teachers must meet program eligibility requirements established by the U.S. Department of State, including appropriate education, teaching qualifications, teaching experience, and English proficiency. Teachers must also meet or obtain any applicable state or district requirements for employment.

A: Cenet, a mission-driven nonprofit and U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor organization, is responsible for issuing the DS-2019 form, maintaining SEVIS records, monitoring program compliance, and supporting both participants and Host Schools/Districts throughout the program. 

Q: What support does Cenet provide to Host Schools/Districts?

A: Cenet provides ongoing sponsor support including program guidance, compliance oversight, orientation resources, participant monitoring, cultural exchange support, and assistance with questions or concerns that may arise during the program. 

Q: Can J-1 Teachers serve as full-time classroom teachers?

A: Yes. J-1 Teachers are authorized to work as full-time teachers in accredited K–12 schools in approved subject and grade-level positions that align with their qualifications and DS-2019 program details. 

Q: Are host schools/districts required to provide housing?

A: No. Schools are not typically required to provide housing; however, many districts choose to assist teachers by sharing local housing resources, temporary housing options, or community contacts to help support a successful transition.
