Eligibility Requirements

Who is eligible for the BridgeUSA (J-1) Research Scholar and Professor Programs?

The BridgeUSA Research Scholar and Professor Programs are designed for qualified international researchers, professors, postdoctoral scholars, and other experienced professionals. Participants may conduct research, teach, lecture, observe, or consult with eligible U.S. research institutions, universities, corporations, or nonprofit organizations for up to four years while promoting the mutual exchange of knowledge and expertise.

Eligible participants may include:  

  • Researchers across fields such as AI, biotechnology, finance, engineering, public policy, and the sciences  
  • Research and development (R&D) professionals  
  • Graduate researchers and PhD candidates with qualifying research appointments  
  • Current J-1 Research Scholars transferring to eligible U.S. host organizations  
  • Postdoctoral researchers, professors, and other experienced academics  
  • F-1 graduates, including those participating in Optional Practical Training (OPT), where eligible  

Who is eligible for the BridgeUSA (J-1) Specialist Program?

The BridgeUSA Specialist Program is designed for experienced professionals with specialized knowledge or skills in their field. Participants may provide consultation, demonstrate specialized techniques, observe U.S. practices, and collaborate with eligible U.S. organizations for up to one year.

Eligible participants may include:

  • Industry professionals with specialized expertise, including consultants, engineers, scientists, business development professionals, technical specialists, artists, and subject matter experts  
  • Founders, entrepreneurs and innovators with demonstrated expertise in their field  
  • Professionals with unique knowledge, techniques, or experience that will benefit a U.S. host organization through collaboration, consultation, training and knowledge exchange

What you will need before you apply?

You'll need a written offer or invitation from your proposed U.S. host organization outlining your position and program activities.

What can you expect from the J-1 Visa application process?

  1. Eligibility Review – We assess your inquiry to confirm that you and your proposed program meet eligibility requirements.  
  2. Application Invitation – If eligible, you'll receive an invitation to apply, and your host organization will complete a brief application.  
  3. Orientation Call – Meet with a Cenet team member for a short video call to review your program and answer any questions.  
  4. Program Approval – Once all requirements have been met, Cenet will finalize your program approval and prepare the required sponsorship documentation.  
  5. Visa Appointment – Schedule your appointment at a U.S. embassy or consulate and apply for your J-1 visa.  
  6. Arrive in the United States – Begin your BridgeUSA exchange and make the most of your professional experience.
